Extension to period cottage on challenging site
This proposal was in response to the client wanting an extra two bedrooms, larger kitchen and a garage large enough to accommodate a van. The site presented two challenges; sloping steeply upwards from front to rear and the proximity to the busy main road. The client was also very specific that the new extension should match perfectly the existing unlisted period cottage.
Due to the requirements of the highways department there had to be a turning circle allowed for in the front garden. A significant excavation had to take place to allow the garage to sit on the existing building line enabling the turning circle to be created. Because of the level changes of the site the first floor extension sits directly on the ground with special attention being paid to the retaining wall between ground and first floors.
